6 Consumer Drivers for 2021 & Beyond
The use of hard copy catalogues by consumers declined a further 14% in 2021 with only 27.9% Australians using them to identify current promotion offers by supermarkets.
The most popular method of checking promotions is via direct emails from the supermarket or reward program.
The Covid-19 Pandemic has seen a groundswell in supporting local businesses.
46.9% of consumers are now looking for country of origin when looking at on-pack information.
Whilst instore shopping remains the preferred way to grocery shop in Australia, the Covid-19 Pandemic saw a significant shift towards online shopping options as people looked for more convenient methods which didn’t require them to leave their home/car and were also deemed “safer” during the height of the Covid outbreak in in 2020.

- Click & Collect 7.6% (+119%)
4.THE DEMISE OF CASH
The use of cash paying for groceries declined a further 16% over the last 12 months with only 1 in 5 consumers now preferring this payment method.
Digital wallets are the fastest growing payment method with 4% of Australians now using this digital technology instead of physical credit/debit cards.
5.PLANT BASED MEALS
Plant based meat alternatives continue to gain momentum on Australian supermarket shelves.
23.7% of consumers purchased a plant based meat alternative in the last 6 months which is up from 15.3% in 2020.
The majority of Australians regularly use reward programs with Woolworths Rewards being used by 72.5% of Australian and Coles Flybuys by 61.6%.
