Australia’s Love Your Pet Day is a time to celebrate our furry, feathery, and scaly companions who bring so much joy to our lives. To mark the day we conducted a Focus On poll to uncover how Australians pamper their beloved pets. From preferred food choices to pampering routines, here’s what we found:

Dogs Lead the Pack

With 55% of respondents owning dogs, they remain the most popular pet choice followed closely by cats at 40%. Birds, fish, and reptiles also have their place in Australian homes, with ownership percentages ranging from 4% to 10%.

Dry Food Dominance

Dry pet food emerges as the top choice among pet owners, with 62% opting for this convenient option. Canned pet food follows closely behind at 56%, indicating a preference for both convenience and variety. Dog owners overwhelmingly prefer dry food (82%), while cat owners lean more towards canned food (74%).

Supermarkets Reign Supreme

65% percent of respondents purchase pet food from supermarkets, highlighting the convenience and accessibility of these retail giants. However, specialty pet stores and online platforms also play a significant role in meeting pet food needs.

Cat Owners are more likely to purchase food from the supermarket where as dog owners have a great tendency of purchasing at large chain pet stores which would such they are visiting these stores to purchase in bulk

Price, Quality, and Reputation

When it comes to selecting pet food and treats, price, ingredient quality, and brand reputation are the top three factors influencing decisions. Pet owners prioritise their pets’ health and well-being while also considering budgetary constraints.

Special Treats and New Toys

Most pet owners pamper their furry friends with special treats (66%) and new toys (40%). Dog owners are fond of indulging their pets with treats (82%) and toys (48%), while cat owners also enjoy spoiling their feline companions in similar ways.

33% of respondents pamper their pets several times per week, with an additional 21% doing so weekly. Dog owners tend to pamper their pets more frequently, with 19% treating their dogs daily and 48% several times per week.

Budget-Friendly Pampering

Nearly 70% of pet owners spend up to $50 per month on pampering their pets, with the majority allocating between $20 and $100 monthly. Dog owners are slightly more inclined to spend within the $50-100 range, reflecting their dedication to providing the best for their canine companions.

Tail Wagging Delights

For dogs, belly rubs/cuddles (62%) and outdoor adventures (52%) top the list of favourite pampering activities. Cats, on the other hand, prefer belly rubs/cuddles (60%) and grooming/brushing sessions (42%) to feel pampered and loved.

As we celebrate National Pet Day, let’s cherish the special bond we share with our pets and continue to shower them with love, care, and the occasional belly rub.
